10 Years On.....

If it's the 40th anniversary today, then it's been 10 years since Colin Linden's gift of 2 magic nights at the Glenn Gould in Toronto.
Along with Blackie & the Rodeo Kings bandmates Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, John Dymond, Gary Craig, and a host of guest musicians, Colin produced an astonishing celebration of the spirit of "The Band", the music & that original event at the Winterland Ballroom.
It was a genius concept - bringing in up & coming talent, who've had this music woven into their lives & memories since birth. Switching out a few of the odder choices of the original guests for Canadian classics that unite the spirit of the crowd.
It's where I discovered Great Lake Swimmers, via Tony Dekker's take on "Case of You" - probably the best of the guest turns.
And swapping genders on vocals to offer a fresh take, like Dione Taylor's vocals harkening to the presence of the Staples singers in the original film.  and Oh, Susanna! taking on Levon's lead in "Rag Mama, Rag".
So many amazing memories. Tom reminded us of Van Morrison's legendary jumpsuit before tearing through "Caravan".  Kathleen Edwards spent weeks reviving her school days violin training so "Evangeline" could get it's proper due.
Luke Doucet flew in from NYC & performed battling a horrible temperaturey flu.. That gorgeous white Gretsch Falcon did justice and more to "Ophelia".  Glad to have made friends from that experience and remain so to this day.
Rick Danko live on "It Makes No Difference" is my favorite piece of music in the world and Stephen Fearing is the only cover I have tolerance for (and in fact love quite a lot).
The iconic presence of Garth Hudson breathing a special kind of life into proceedings via the keys, and truly epic rendition of "Chest Fever".
Talking of the now bittersweet hope that Richard Bell would be with us for this anniversary.
I could go on and on.
Like Colin said that day - celebrating the spirit of the original event, not trying to recreate it.
It was recorded and aired a few times on CBC but rights prevent it from being released for purchase as originally planned. A great shame. For all it's complications & faults, "The Last Waltz" truly lives up to statements that get tossed around with too much ease - legend, classic, genius. It is these things because of the dents & scars make up its character. Far more than the sum of ingredients which make up its parts.
And that 30th anniversary event gave the music due respect and adoration.

It is a weekend I'll remember forever.
We had Indian food instead of traditional turkey & cranberry Bill Graham had provided back in '76. No chandeliers in sight. Our crowd 'celebrities' included Cathy Jones & Jay Linden. And there was something very right about winding up the evening with beers at pool at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Including a Strombo sighting, which involved a rasta hat that was so very wrong.
Met up with friends from Ottawa, Halifax, Orillia & basically had a slumber party at the Sheraton with brunch the next morning to hash things over.

The local theatre is showing "The Last Waltz" this evening and all weekend. Going to head to the matinee Saturday or Sunday. It might not be crowded but I know the B&RK boys will be with me in spirit. They serve beer & I reckon I can smuggle in leftover turkey or something appropriate.

My ridiculously talented friend, Trevor Weeks has provided a record of rehearsals and both performances for the ages.
If you're ever at my place, ask to see those pictures. I promise it's worth it.

#ImNotWithHim

Hillary was not my first choice. I've not kept that a secret. The longer the campaign has gone one, I've learned to admire her preparedness, strength and genuine desire to do a good job.
Do I think she's made mistakes? Yes. Do I think she will in office? Probably. Every other man President has in the history of the country. I'm not saying I like it. I'm saying I acknowledge it.
So I'm confused here still what people think electing the other option will accomplish?
this crap with the emails? it's a mess. but it's mostly hot air & the press. so remember that Fox & the Daily Mail & the like have all to gain by stirring the election. And by having T***p in office. this is the old boys money club waging war because they are afraid. And don't think for a minute he cares about making anything great besides other rich white men.
He wants us to be a country where segregation is acceptable again.
He wants us to be a country where sexual violence against women is something to wink & laugh at.
He wants us to be a country where a man can be on trial for child rape & run for President.
He wants us to be the country the rest of the world won't want to deal with.
He wants us to be the country which cannot explore reasonable gun laws.
He wants us to be a country whose leader will walk away & deny responsibility as he has with every company he's dumped in bankruptcy court.
He wants us to be a country where the wage gap increases, poverty levels rise & rich businessmen don't have to pay tax.
He has stated, without compunction, every step of the way, that anything that doesn't go in his favor is corrupt. But the same systems will be fine if he wins?
None of this makes us great.
We need reform in Washington. He will not bring it. With Hillary in office it's possible.
When I say #ImWithHer, it's not just HRC. I'm with her because as a result of his campaign, I'm far more afraid to be a woman living & working in this country than I was a year ago. And am afraid for other women, daughters of friends & family, & minority friends & family.
I'm with her because what isn't great about our country is the bucketfuls of hate & violence that have been unleashed.
I don't know. I've always said, I'll stay & fight. That if you love America, you don't quit when it doesn't go your way. I didn't leave when Gore lost. And I had the option.
But staying here is scary. I don't like feeling that.
I'm pretty good about listening people's opinions I disagree with. But I'm appalled if anyone would change their vote based on this flimsy shit Weiner's ex & the Murdoch empowered media are stirring up.
I just can't fathom why anyone can vote for him. You'd think the kiddie rape would be enough, you know?
The tax evasion. the lying about employment.
all the things you care about in your every day life.
I'm just sad.
My friends in UK & Europe are scared & angry. Today Sian asked if we have a plan if he wins? Do we?
I feel like we're not ready. And it's going to be really ugly.
I wish I had a better ending to this from a writing standpoint. and a human outlook.
But I'm just sad. And scared. And angry.
Because I was proud to be American. I'd still like to be. I love this country. Love takes work.
I just don't know.
But I know #ImNotWithHim #NeverHim

My Vote by Roger Angell

I realize that for the most part, people I'm connected with here are similar in thought to myself politically so they will read this & already agree.
But I am hoping some of these more recent articles - this & Kirk Douglas & others from a generation that remembers we can't turn our back on evil....I hope they can change a mind or two.
So maybe just share it with family or friends that don't agree with you.
Maybe instead of screaming, ask them why? And maybe we can get them to see that while yes, there do need to be huge changes in the Washington status quo, He Who Shall Not Be Named is not that change.

A Change Is Gonna Come #GBBO

In an age where it's argued daily that women can't, this show was most watched in the UK, sporting a hosting cast where women outnumbered men 3 to 1 (+ Jo Brand hosting An Extra Slice). These 2 women offered humor, compassion, intelligence, grace & diversity.
There's so much to hate about Love Productions decision to make commercials instead of craft but this is the worst. Honestly, I kinda hope Paul & Mary quit too.
To quote S5 finalist, Richard Burr - Channel4 just bought a tent.
I love them for their Paralympic support but I don't like them very much right now.
It took a lot of courage for Mel & Sue to make this choice. To say they care about the kind of work they do not just what they get paid. In a time where they'll still have to fight for work.
It's going to be just another competition show & that's really sad

The Guardian article

Consent

Just wanted to make sure I noted this down somewhere

I haven't been watching "The Fall" but writer Allan Cubitt deserves all kinds of awards for this wording of consent. It's stunning
"Men always think in terms of fight or flight. In fact, the most common instinct in the face of this kind of threat is to freeze. If she didn't fight, if she didn't scream, if she was silent and numb, it's because she was petrified.
"If she went with him quietly, it's because she was afraid for her life. And not just her life - yours and Nancy's and the baby's.
"In that state of fear she might well have been compliant. She might well have submitted. But that does not mean she consented."

Graham Linehan - #RHLSTP

"the right wing press is like fan fiction for politics"
I really adore Herring's #RHLSTP casts. They're a great balance of silly, crass, erudite & insightful. This one with Graham Linehan is a particular treat if you're interested in comedy writing or love shows like "Father Ted" or "The In Crowd"
And it's maybe one of the best discussions I've heard of current politics and how the press are responsible, including that stunning quote

Gene Wilder

Jesus, 2016.

via ABC news, including the incredibly gracious family statement. I hope folk remember him as so much more than Willie Wonka.
Great actor, writer, Army veteran, Old Vic alumni, and tireless fundraising for cancer research and more.
I'll always remember him with a smile.
And I honestly hope there are genuine pearly gates so he can say
"What knockers!" to St Peter.

ABC news article with family statement

the Late, Great Steven Hill

I watched Running On Empty again not long ago. The restaurant scene towards the end with he & Christine Lahti is a masterclass. Nearly 10 minutes of close ups. wouldn't be allowed to be shot like that these days & they just deliver.
He's the true OG from Law & Order & one of the reasons I adore those first years so much.
Tons of other great films - Yentl, Hearburn, Garbo Talks, Brighton Beach Memoirs. every tv series made in the 60s.
I'm a huge fan. 94 is good years
Thank you, Steven Hill. We're a better place for talent like yours

Album Cover Tags

I don't tag but I complied with a couple of these.

oh, I almost forgot I promised Anne.
There's this album cover thingy. I don't do tags for these, but if you've got an album cover you want to share, that's never a bad thing.
These are the instructions I was given:
"Rules are:
1. Post the cover of a great album.
2. No need to go into why it's a great album. Just accept it is.
3. Nominate 6 mates.
4. Tag the person who nominated you.
5. Keep it going.
Copy and paste changing the names:"
Like I said, I'll be skipping nominations & tags but there you go
Mine is Thin Lizzy "Jailbreak". mostly because then I can boss you to check out artist Jim Fitzpatrick who designed it.

2. Since it's #Hip day, I'll indulge Christopher Fink but not tagging other people. Join in if you want.
I'm picking another great Canadian band who I know are playing tonight with tons of love for the Hip. #LostTogether

Bits & Bobs - iPod Shuffle Game

Just to make sure I got the full list in.

 - Whitehorse - "I'm On Fire"

 - Elliot BROOD - "Without Again"

 - Miles Davis - "Billy Boy"

 - The Pogues - "Streams of Whiskey"

 - Icona Pop (ft. Charlie XCX) - "I Love It"

 - Elton John - "Saturday Night's All Right"

No embarrassment here. That's a damn good hockey tune.
(also, since this isn't for my website using a non-official video. Quite a backup band there)

 - Mary Chapin Carpenter - "Wherever You Are"
Been a fan for a long time & my dad will totally (& rightfully) take credit for introducing me to her.
"Party Doll & Other Favorites" is a perfect set up for greatest hits. They included live versions, cuts from movie soundtracks & other unreleased material & a couple new tracks of which this is one.
From the opening intro by David Letterman, it's a great album.

Some of these there are full separate posts with stories. Feel free to check them out

Nadiya - #DID

Oh my US pals, if you're not watching Bake Off with this fantastic lady then you're missing out. It & she are about so much more. It's an amazing journey in self confidence. and she has, in many ways, changed minds about race & women.
I hope this plays ok. It's from current episode of Desert Island Discs & I will gladly send you the download link if you want.

Jon Polito

Go watch Homicide:Life On The Street from the beginning & see how effin' terrific he was. (warning. there's a spoiler in the obit but it doesn't matter. it's still a piece of greatness & his character resonated all 7 seasons)
Not ready to start saying goodbye to this cast yet, dammit. Not at all.
Once again, cancer can get fucked.

Washington Post obit

there's a handful of rare fabulous goodbyes to tv characters. H:LOTS's "Crosetti" is one of them. Andre Braugher in uniform is perfection.

Quotes:

"that silly man and his silly cookies"

"we go retail on our friends"

"just one life-affirming story after another"

That's a long 29 years.
She earned it on her own merits but for sure stands on the shoulders of the amazing ladies who came before her & work with her now. They all, in some way, made the world a better funnier place. They are the history of women in comedy. All 50 of them.

Dear Emmy
Please stop shoehorning religion & politics into the "In Memoriam" section. It's tacky & disrespectful.

 -
I hadn't realized D.V. DeVincentis was one of the folk behind the OJ series. he's one of Cusack's old pals that did Grosse Pointe Blank & High Fidelity with him. almost makes me want to watch it (almost).
Sterling K. Brown showing you don't have to write it down to make it real. Honest, funny & from the heart. one of my faves. & bonus points for skipping out on the press to go & cheer for Courtney B. Vance's win.
also is anyone having more fun watching other people win than Pedro Pascal?

POGUEMAHONE!!!

IPOD SHUFFLE GAME Day 4
The Pogues "Streams of Whiskey" (Demo)
Those parenthesis matter because then you know it's from the fantastic box set, "Just Look Them Straight In the Eye and Say..POGUEMAHONE!!!"
Back in 2008, I saw a press release from Rhino that it was coming out. Sent a link to my pal Stephen Fearing, knowing he was headed to UK to tour, with the comment "If I was going to be in Ireland & I knew it was almost Tom's (it was) birthday, I'd be doing some shopping". haha. banter exchanged. life moves on.
cut to later in the summer & SF is gigging at the Livery in Benton Harbor. so I rent a car & head over (from Chicago).
Gorgeous evening. good beer. chatting after gig. I probably brought a treat of some description
& he's like 'oh wait I have something for you' & pulls that box set out of his bag.
Gobsmacked, me. Will always be one of my favorites things because it was so kind of him & it's UK release. Just a real treat.
I've loved The Pogues forever. have most of the classics on vinyl. Just one of my faves. & the real treat of this set is all the material with Kirsty MacColl. Not just "Fairytale" but tons of other great tunes.
I love it. I love having the cuts from soundtracks & the demos & the live bits.
So with all 5 discs loaded into itunes, odds were a Pogues tune would show.
So glad it's one of the few they did a video for. It's even Cait O'Riordan era!
Not so glad Shane chose to appear in just his pants (:42 mark)

#IPODSHUFFLEGAME Day 2

Elliott BROOD - "Without Again"
(I swear on my life I'm using shuffle. I had even closed itunes & reopened. It just has really good taste)
Back in 2006, when you could make friends with a friend of a friend via myspace (I know!) and have it not be creepy, I did just that.
Trevor Weeks Photography took fantastic shots of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings & friends when they performed "We Shall Be Released" at the Glen Gould.

This set of head shots caught my eye and later he shared some of the behind the scenes & performance photos.

We became pals sharing stories about the show & in turn he pointed out that I could listen to the CBC on my computer radio & should check out
Craig NorrisAmanda PutzVish Khanna & assorted other people and bands.
For sure these boys were one of the first (along with Wooden Sky, USW of Montreal, YSPYSD!) I have some great memories since then - listening to "Mountain Meadows" out by Trev's pool, a cheeky early evening swim with the Laforet brothers in Couchiching & Mark wondering why we didn't wake him up to join us. And seeing them live tons of times since in multiple states & countries & trading beers & baked goods.
They're a don't miss live show. Fantastic energy. Funny. Smart. Kind.
Can't say enough about how happy I am I told Trev he took good pictures all those years ago.
"Without Again" is always a highlight. It's a tune of theirs that I find myself randomly humming on a regular basis. One of my fav sets of lyrics they've written.

"His love went south, and he'll go west
A mountain song couldn't fill that hole in his chest"

this is from KEXP Seattle studio:

#IPODSHUFFLEGAME

Just an explanation of this thing that started on FB. I'll post them all week.

My pal Chris Webb is playing so giving it a shot. Like he said, not nominating. Just play if you want to. My disclaimer will be I save pop tunes to entertain the kids when I hang with them, just in case anything crazy pops up
In case you missed it ...
THE iPOD SHUFFLE GAME
None of that nomination nonsense; just play if you want to:
1. Set your mp3 player to Random Play All (or whatever it's called on your device)
2. For 7 days post the first song it plays to your timeline, preferably from YouTube etc so we can all have a listen and judge you accordingly (please name me in your post so I don't miss any)
3. Tell us something about the song: why it's on your player, why you like it, if you're embarrassed to have it, ... that kind of thing
4. BE HONEST. NO CHEATING. So don't do it from a playlist or skip tracks to try and look cool

Day 1

Christine M. Hinchman And my first is Whitehorse. "I'm On Fire" Couldn't be more thrilled to share a band I think are fantastic. and I adore Melissa & Luke quite a lot. Pretty sure I heard them play this live before it was recorded.
(Additionally, my pal Amelia here wants to know why Melissa doesn't have a pretty white guitar too?)

#RIPR2

Summer of '77, I spent a week at Pilgrim Haven - our church's camp over near South Haven, MI. My mom & brother came to pick me up on the Saturday & could not stop raving about this fantastic movie they'd seen. It was so good I had to see it. That day. We stopped at Meijer for a paper to check the show time & she bought us t-shirts to wear to the theatre.  I hadn't a clue what they were talking about & chose a yellow one with this image because I thought the droids were fun or cute or some other pigtailed preteen nonsensical reason.
Well, of course, it was the original "Star Wars".
We changed in the car driving to the Bijou & waited in line. As the show before us let out, people leaving pointed & cheered at our shirts - a mixed bag of emotion when you're a 12 year old girl, but all good vibes coming towards us.
Over the next year we saw it in the theatre 6 times, including a double feature at a drive in (probably Homer) with "Clash of the Titans". Unprecedented for our family, that kind of viewing.  And we were frequent movie goers.
There's tons of people who love Star Wars & lots of them know more than me & are big collectors & whatever. But that experience was so amazing & special. There's no explaining to people that feeling of how movies changed that summer. How the world was just a bit different. You can tell them but they can't feel that emotion.
It's fun to goof on it a bit now but I'll always have a soft spot for the droids because of that shirt and that day.
So thanks, Kenny Baker. You were in some great films (Mona Lisa. The Elephant Man.
Time Bandits!!! ) and you made millions of people so very happy.
A real true genuine legend.
